The research was conducted in the Neuroscience Program of The Saban Research Institute. Results of this study will be reported in the February 6, 2008 issue of the journal Cell Metabolism.

Mechanism by Which Tumors Evade Natural Killer T Cells Discovered by Research-Scientists at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles

Leonid S. Metelitsa, M.D., Ph.D., a physician-scientist in the Division of
Hematology-Oncology at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and assistant professor of
pediatrics at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern
California, and his team have discovered the mechanism by which aggressive
tumors evade Natural Killer T cells (NKTs), a key subset of the immune system.

A novel 3D magnetic resonance imaging software that allows physicians using
laptop computers to “visually swim” through the anatomy of patients – and
expedite their diagnoses – was showcased this week at the Annual Clinical
Congress of the American College of Surgeons (ACS) in Chicago. The presentation
was made by Roger De Filippo, M.D., an attending urologist at Childrens Hospital
Los Angeles and an assistant professor of urology at the Keck School of Medicine
of the University of Southern California.

Genes have been discovered in a common childhood solid tumor, neuroblastoma,
that can be used to dramatically improve prediction of how the tumor will
respond to treatment. Shahab Asgharzadeh, M.D., and Robert C. Seeger, M.D., and
their colleagues at The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los
Angeles identified 55 genes whose activity classifies children with metastatic
(widespread) neuroblastoma who have an excellent or poor chance of survival with
current therapy.

The National Cancer Institute has renewed a five-year Program Project Grant
(PPG) totaling $10 million for research-scientists at Childrens Hospital Los
Angeles and at 13 other children’s hospitals and related institutions throughout
the country. The grant will fund laboratory research at Childrens Hospital that
leads to clinical testing by the 14 institutions that have formed a consortium
called New Approaches to Neuroblastoma Therapy (NANT).
