Living Proof's Success
Childrens Hospital Los Angeles successfully concluded Phase I of Living Proof, a $500 million campaign to raise funds to support expansion of key services to provide the highest quality care for children in 2006, significantly exceeding its goal. Below is a brief summary of the support that was raised and how these gifts are supporting care:
Research
Over $85 million raised
Chair: Theodore R. Samuels
Former Chairs: Linda Hodge and Otis "Spike" Booth, III
Generous support raised for The Saban Research Institute provides for:
- recruitment of top-notch research scientists
- endowments to provide protected research time for our most promising scientists
- construction of state-of-the-art research laboratories
Cancer
Over $79 million raised
Co-chairs: John D. "Jack" Pettker and Paul M. Schaeffer
Generous support raised for the Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases provides for:
- supportive programs for cancer patients and survivors
- endowment of chairs in leukemia, and bone and soft tissue tumors
- laboratory and clinical research, as well as health promotion and outcomes research
Heart
Over $8 million raised
Co-chairs: Thomas E. Larkin, Jr. and Jeffrey Worthe
Generous support raised for the Heart Institute provides for:
- state-of-the-art equipment to correct heart defects
- clinical research programs
- endowed program chairs
- physician and research endowments
Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism
Over $21 million raised
Chair: Cathy Siegel Weiss
Generous support raised for the Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism provides for:
- clinical care programs in diabetes, endocrinology, obesity, and bone density and composition
- support services for children and their families
- endowed program chairs
Orthopaedics
Over $8 million raised
Co-chairs: Enrique Hernandez, Jr. and Art Ulene, MD
Generous support raised for the Children's Orthopaedic Center provides for:
- infrastructure to give surgeons "protected time" for research to advance new therapies nd surgical techniques
- endowed chairs in clinical care and research
Brain
Over $7 million raised
Co-chairs: Lynda Boone Fetter and Jose Lozano
Generous support raised for the Children's Brain Center provides for:
- a new Neuroscience Research Program
- endowment in psychiatry
- creation of the Institute for the Developing Mind
Center for Learning
Over $11 million raised
Generous funds raised through the Physicians Campaign and other efforts supported the Children's Hospital Institute of Medical Education (CHIME) which united all of the hospital's medical education efforts, invested in the resources to expand efforts, and advanced national pediatric medical education. Generous support raised for the campaign supported the Graduate Medical Education Program, the RN Residency Program and other educational endeavors.
Emerging Programs
Over $66 million raised
Generous funds raised for emerging programs at our hospital supports:
- The Institute for Maternal-Fetal Health - fetal diagnostic and treatment center
- The Laura P. and Leland K. Whittier Virtual Pediatric Intensive Care Unit - the world's first virtual pediatric intensive care unit
- Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery - applying new knowledge to tissue regeneration and surgical techniques tto treat children with physical deformities
- Chase Child Life - program provides counseling to help patients and family members prepare for medical procedures
- Vision Center - the largest pediatric ophthalmology program in the United States
Unrestricted and Annual Support
Over $150 million raised
Generous unrestricted donations were directed by our Board of Trustees to assist in areas where the hospital's needs were greatest. In addition to under-reimbursed care, these essential gifts enabled the hospital to fund such critical needs as:
- groundbreaking research
- graduate medical education
- medical equipment
- facility expansion
- new construction
New Hospital Building
Over $84 million raised
Generous support for a new inpatient facility, The New Hospital Building, was raised during the Living Proof campaign. The camaign for the New Hospital building continues under the banner of Living Proof II.
