As one of the preeminent children’s hospital in the United States, and an established leader in cell and gene-based therapies, Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is at the forefront of innovative treatments with stem cells for many childhood and adult diseases.  First-class laboratory facilities contribute to our standing.

The Saban Research Institute

The Saban Research Institute of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles is among the largest and most productive pediatric research facilities in the United States, with 91 investigators engaged in 239  laboratory studies, clinical trials and community-based research and health services. It is one of the nation’s few freestanding research centers in the nation to combine scientific inquiry with patient clinical care dedicated exclusively to children. Its base of knowledge is widely considered to be among the best in pediatric medicine.

Among its other advantages, The Saban Research Institute has:

  • 202,725 square feet of laboratory and support space for investigators within the H. Russell and Jeanne R. Smith Research Tower and The Saban Research Institute building
  • An NIH-funded General Clinical Research Center
  • Expertise in clinical trial conduct and compliance
  • A federally certified Good Manufacturing Practice facility for processing human stem cells
  • Key research cores:  Flow Cytometry, Cell Imaging, Vectors, Biostatistics, Histology, Radiology

Research Imaging

The Research Imaging group in the Department of Radiology at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles maintains more than 2,000 square feet of research and office space. Currently six faculty-level PhD researchers, two bioengineers (MS), as well as multiple support and research staff personnel work on a variety of clinical and basic science imaging-related research projects. These involve collaborations with investigators at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, the University of Southern California and the City of Hope Cancer Center, with funding from institutional, foundation and NIH grants.
