Cancer Registry

Childrens Hospital Los Angeles established a cancer registry in 1968, 20 years before required to do so by California State Law.  Currently, all hospitals and physicians in California are required to report information about patients with any and every type of cancer to a regional registry.   The California Cancer Registry (CCR) was created in 1985 by the state legislature in response to public concerns that more was needed to be done to find causes and cures for cancer.

Childrens Hospital's Cancer Registry is the largest pediatric cancer registry in California.
There are nealry 4,200 patients in our registry's active database (patients diagnosed after 1985).
An additional 2,500 historical cases are catalogued (patients diagnosed between 1968 & 1984).
We report approximately 275 cases each year.
Patients are followed annually throughout their lives.

How is Information Kept?

Demographic, diagnostic and treatment information is abstracted from the patients' medical records and entered into a special computer program.
Strict procedures are in place to protect patient confidentiality.
The California Cancer Registry requires a 97% accuracy rate for all data entered.

What Else Does the Cancer Registry Do?

The Cancer Registry coordinates weekly Tumor Board conferences at our hospital.
Weekly conferences are open to physicians and staff of our hospital, and outside institutions.
Each week a specific type of malignancy is discussed, as well as any patient consultations requested by our physicians.
The conferences are also open to healthcare providers from outside institutions who have an interest in a given case or are affiliates of Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.  Physicians from other facilities including Kaiser Permanente, Queen of Angels/Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center and LAC/USC are welcome to present their pediatric patients at the Tumor Board conferences.
