Bricks:  The New Hospital Building

Living Proof II builds upon the success of Living Proof: The Campaign for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles.  In our previous campaign, we raised more than $500 million to continue our important work for the children and families of Los Angeles and beyond. 

Moving forward, Living Proof II will raise support to meet the hospital's $250 million philanthropic need to build a New Hospital Building to treat the children of Los Angeles and beyond.  Our current inpatient building is over 40 years old and does not meet seismic safety requirements.  Additionally, standards in patient care and the culture of family involvement have changed dramatically since the original facility was built. 

In June of 2005, we broke ground on a 460,000-square-foot New Hospital Building that will support the absolute best in children's health care. The hospital will:

• open in 2010
• significantly enhance our ability to provide family-centered care
• optimize the latest medical technologies
• advance new opportunities in medicine for children
• increase our ability to accept children who are the most critically ill

Brains & Programs:  Children's Fund

Children's Fund supports the hospital's annual operational budget. 

The bulk of the hospital's annual budget is supported by reimbursements received through care provided for children, these reimbursements only pay for the bare minimum of care, care that might be adequate for adults with the maturity to understand their illness, and the coping skills to adapt to crisis. 

This level of care is not adequate to meet the needs of children.  Support for the children's fund helps us ensure that our hospital supports the salaries of the best and brightest medical staff who provide the very best in pediatric care.  It also supports innovative programs that support children's psychological and emotional healing alongside their physical recoveries. 

The Children's Fund is a way for people to annually support an umbrella of vital services for children and families, research for cures and new therapies, and training of future scientists and caregivers.  Programs supported through this campaign include:

• Art therapy
• Child development
• Emergency Transport Program
• Emergency Department Services
• Language and cultural services
• Pain management
• Physical and occupational therapy
• Psychology
• Social work
• Spirtual care
