Today, because of breakthroughs in the treatment of childhood cancers – many pioneered by the physician-scientists at the Childrens Center for Cancer and Blood Diseases in an approach to medical problem-solving that enables them to integrate their laboratory experience with their clinical expertise, moving effectively from “Bench to Bedside” – children, teenagers and young adults receive the most advanced treatment available anywhere. Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and MetabolismThe Center for Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism is at the forefront of patient care, basic and clinical research in diabetes, obesity, growth, bone metabolism and endocrinology. More than 2,000 children and adolescents with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes are under the care of its pediatric diabetes specialists, certified diabetes educators and nutritionists – one of the largest programs of its kind in America. The Center for Fetal and Neonatal MedicineThe Center for Fetal and Neonatal Medicine is one of the county's most innovative models for the care and treatment of the most complex medical and surgical maternal-fetal and neonatal problems. The Center provides care for premature and severely ill infants at our hospital, as well as at three other community locations. In addition, the Center also provides a full scope of diagnostic and treatment services to fetuses and mothers with high-risk pregnancies. The Heart InstituteThe Heart Institute is known throughout the world as a leader in the treatment of pediatric heart disease, offering the most advanced diagnostic and treatment modalities available in cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, cardiothoracic transplantation and intensive care, as well as innovation in cardiac research. Physicians provide comprehensive care to 8,000 children each year – fetus through adolescent – who have congenital or acquired heart and lung disorders. Childrens Orthopaedic CenterThe Childrens Orthopaedic Center is one of the nation’s most comprehensive programs dedicated to pediatric musculoskeletal care, education and research. Its Scoliosis and Spine Disorders Program, one of the largest in the country, is the only one of its kind in Los Angeles County devoted exclusively to the pediatric population. Its state-of-the-art Motion Analysis Laboratory is designed to analyze muscle activity and joint movements in children who have difficulty walking, such as those with cerebral palsy, spina bifida and congenital leg conditions. The Saban Research InstituteWith an international staff of more than 100 scientists and physicians, The Saban Research Institute is one of the country’s few freestanding pediatric research centers focused on translating inquiry in the laboratory into clinical therapies. The Institute ranks among the top six federally funded pediatric research facilities around the country and is home to scientists conducting a wide array of basic research projects design to result in healthcare improvements for children around the world. USC-CHLA Institute for Pediatric Clinical ResearchImprovements in care for children with cancer requires the ability for new anti-cancer drugs created in the laboratory to move quickly to the bedside for testing and implementation. This involves a rigorous clinical trials process. Our USC-CHLA Insitute for Pediatric Clinical Research was launched to facilitate this transfer of knowledge and move cutting-edge treatments to the bedsides of sick children more quickly than ever before. The Vision CenterThe Vision Center, the largest pediatric ophthalmology program in the United States, is a referral center for children afflicted with complex forms of eye disease, providing the full range of inpatient and outpatient services, with subspecialty programs in cornea and refractive surgery, oculoplastics, optic nerve hypoplasia, retinoblastoma, retinal disorders, neurophysiology of vision and non-invasive technology. It is the only program in the country with expertise and treatment and research programs in virtually every pediatric ophthalmologic subspecialty area with the creation of six new institutes: the Retina Institute, the Cornea Institute, the Eye Birth Defects Institute, the Vision Development Institute, the Eye Technology Institute and the Orbit and Eye Movement Institute. |
